May 23rd - Joshua Cherniss

Today was one of the most educational days on the entire trip. We started the day like any other by getting down to the lobby on our own time and making sure to grab some breakfast. After that, we made our way to a local Chinese University to meet with some local political science students to try to gauge from their knowledge of the local sports culture if flag football would be something that would work in China. From what we understood, it seems like Flag Football, if given the proper attention and resources by the government, could be something that could take root in China and become a premier sport. But it was all up to the Chinese government to decide if they wanted it to be so. I had a great time talking with the local students about their experiences in China and about the local sports culture they have experienced. We also had to give presentations with some of the students that we were grouped with, which was an interesting experience to be able to learn about the local sports culture from them. They are big soccer and basketball fans, as you would expect, as those are two of the most popular sports in China. After meeting with the students there and wishing them goodbye, we made our way to a soccer game for one of the Chinese Super League teams that is located at the Workers Stadium in Beijing. The game was exciting, and I had a super great time, but unfortunately, the home team was unable to come out with a win. They ended up losing 1-2, with them even conceding an own goal. Some of the locals were not happy about this result, as I am unable to understand angry Chinese, but the facial expressions and body gestures said it all.
